How do we calculate rankings?

Since data behaves differently depending on the type of ranking, the computing methods and manner of presenting the results depend on the kind of data. The analysed factors are:

1. PERCENTAGE SHARE OF PAGE VIEWS

Rankings based on percentage shares of page views (generated from a researched country):

  • WEB BROWSERS
  • WEB BROWSERS - GROUPS
  • WEB BROWSER GROUPS - DETAILES
  • WEB BROWSERS - ENGINES
  • OPERATING SYSTEMS
  • OPERATING SYSTEMS - FAMILIES
  • FLASH PLAYER
  • SCREEN RESOLUTIONS
  • COLOUR DEPTH
  • REGIONS
  • COOKIES ACCEPTANE RATE

Algorithm (on the example of the web browsers ranking):
The basis for calculating a position in the ranking is the number of page views generated from the Ukrainian sites enrolled in gemiusTraffic. For each browser, we calculate the total number of page views on all sites, so that we can obtain the percentage share of page views from this  browser relative to all page views from identified browsers. The result defines the ranking position.

A ranking created on the basis of the above results will look like this:

Przykład prezentowania wyników
1. BROWSER Z
39.37%
2. BROWSER Y
33.75%
3. BROWSER X
26.88%

All the aforementioned types of rankings are calculated in the same way.

Rationale and interpretation:
The researched factors are characterised by numerous samples and (since the results' dependence on the type of analysed websites is low) very few outliers and relatively low data scatter. This information allows us to treat the websites collectively and present the aforementioned rankings based on the general percentage share of page views.

2. MEAN PERCENTAGE SHARE OF PAGE VIEWS

2A. Rankings based on mean percentage shares of views (generated from a researched country):

  • MOBILE DEVICES – MODELS
  • MOBILE DEVICES – PRODUCERS

Algorithm (on the example of the mobile devices models ranking):
The basis for calculating a position in the ranking is the number of page views generated on the Ukrainian websites enrolled  in gemiusTraffic. For each website, we prepare a percentage distribution of page views made from different mobile devices, and then we calculate the arithmetic mean from the previously counted percentage shares for each model. The final result defines the ranking position.

The aforementioned mobile devices producers ranking is calculated in the same way.

Rationale and interpretation
:
Due to the relatively small sample and the fact that the results are prone to swings caused by changes in the large websites participating in the research or by emergence of new sites targeted at users of a concrete device, the data presented is averaged for the sites.
The results should be interpreted as the percentage share of page views made from a particular mobile device on an average site, and not as the final share of page views made from this device on all the websites collectively.

2B.  Rankings based on averaged percentage shares of page views (made from outside a researched country):

  • COUNTRIES

Algorithm:
The basis for calculating the ranking position is the number of page views generated on the Ukrainian websites participating in gemiusTraffic. For each website, we prepare a percentage distribution of page views made by users connecting from abroad, and then we calculate the arithmetic mean from the previously counted percentage shares for each of the countries. The final result defines the ranking position.

3. COUNTRY Y

Rationale and interpretation:
Due to the relatively small number of page views made from abroad and the fact that the results are prone to swings caused by changes in the large websites participating in the research, the data presented is averaged for the sites.
The results should be interpreted as the percentage share of page views made from a particular country on an average site, and not as the final share of page views on all the websites collectively.

3. MEAN PERCENTAGE SHARE OF WEBSITE VISITS

Rankings based on averaged percentage shares of visits (made from the researched country):

  • WEB DIRECTORIES
  • SEARCH – DOMAINS
  • SEARCH – ENGINES

Algorithm (on the example of the ranking of directories)
:
The basis for calculating the ranking position is the number of page views begun by entering the Ukrainian websites participating in the research, via links displayed in the web directories. For each website, we prepare a percentage distribution of visits made from web directories, and then, for each directory, we calculate the arithmetic mean from the previously counted percentage shares. The final result defines the ranking position.

2. DIRECTORY X
35.80%
3. DIRECTORY Y
15.00%

The aforementioned search domain and engines rankings are calculated in the same way.

Rationale and interpretation
:
The methodology we adopt protects the ranking against disturbances caused by websites with heavy traffic. In case of rankings based on absolute number of visits from search engines, a site with large traffic located at the beginning of the list if search hits (e.g. as a sponsored link) takes the search engine higher in the ranking. In this ranking, such possibility has been eliminated, since the heavy traffic websites have the same influence over the final result as websites of less intense traffic. The situation is similar in case of web directories rankings.
The results should be interpreted as the percentage share of page views begun by entering an average website from a particular web directory, search engine domain or its engine, and not as a share of such visits for the whole group of websites researched in the studied country.
